Carl watched trees and houses zip by as the taxi headed for the airport. The chatter and laughter that Christiana shared with their cab driver should’ve delighted him—he appreciated his wife’s ability to find common ground with almost anyone on the face of the earth—but he was preoccupied on this morning of their departure. Before sleeping last night, Christiana had complained about tightness in her chest just as a prolonged coughing spell overtook her. The memory of that cough made the hackles rise on his neck. It felt wrong, suspicious. Like a bad omen.

More than anything, he wanted to reach inside his wife and, through his touch, make sure everything was all right, that there was nothing to dread, nothing a change in inhalers couldn’t remedy. But magic powers he lacked, and he’d have to live with anxiety and uncertainty until they got home. Until they saw her doctors again.

Christiana tore Carl from his distraction by linking her arm in his and pulling herself closer to him. As he gazed at her, the bright smile on her face and the joy in her eyes soothed him. And when she spoke to him, she shattered his every worry.

“Touch me,” she whispered. It was the perfect invitation, the perfect culmination to a splendid week.

Carl brought his hand to his wife’s cheek. Softly, he stroked her face. His inner fears quieted and he relaxed, thankful for his wife’s invitation. Regardless of what that cough had meant, as long as his fingers touched her skin, everything in his world made sense.
